<h6>About the event</h6>
Our world needs leadership! On a backlog of the climate crisis, geopolitical changes, inequality discussions, and other impactful megatrends, the world is facing a shift in paradigms. Big forces are at play and strong, responsible leadership is needed to find new answers to increasingly complex challenges.   But what does the future of leadership look like, and what are the critical leadership capabilities in a world of constant change?   The CBS Leadership Think Tank is an initiative from <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.cbs.dk/en/cbs-agenda/areas/cbs-leadership-centre" target="_blank">CBS Leadership Centre</a>, which combines the newest research with the experiences of leadership practitioners, to create a visionary, robust, and nuanced picture of the future of leadership.   On 19 September 2024, the Think Tank begins its next chapter, extending its reach beyond the confines of the Think Tank group with a large, open event! Get insights into the discoveries of the future of leadership through inspiring discussions, panel debates and cases.

True ESG: Moving Beyond Compliance to Purpose

<h6>About the event</h6>
In the coming years, the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence will enhance transparency regarding companies' efforts in sustainability, ethics, and governance.
Amid these new demands, companies risk focusing excessively on compliance and merely meeting minimum requirements, rather than establishing a new purpose and comprehensive strategy for future ESG work. In essence, it is not solely about compliance, but also about developing ethical standards and prioritising efforts.
While compliance may currently dominate attention, strategy implementation is equally crucial. According to a 2023 survey by Morningstar Sustainalytics, 90% of companies either have or are developing a formal ESG strategy. However, many face significant challenges, such as concerns over performance, a lack of comprehensive data, and fears of greenwashing. Indeed, balancing ESG with growth targets remains one of the most prominent concerns.
So, how can companies transition from compliance to strategic implementation? What are the key challenges for Danish companies, and what should they consider when building a strategy based on reporting?
Building on the success of our previous event, <a href="/en/events/p16-the-end-of-esg" title="P16: The end of ESG?">'The end of ESG? Navigating the turbulent landscape'</a>, we are excited to invite you to our second event on current ESG challenges and opportunities. Once again, we have invited CBS Associate Professor Kristjan Jespersen and Simon Taylor, Senior Director and Co-founder at Position Green, to discuss ESG, focusing this time on the transition from compliance to strategy implementation and new insights from Position Green's anticipated new ESG100 report.

The US presidential election is not just about consolidating or switching the seats of power. At this online event, CBS Assistant Professor Yumi Park dives into how Danish and international trade relations could be affected by the impending election.

The US presidential election is not just about consolidating or switching the seats of power – it also has a significant impact on trade relations for companies trading with the US.
During the Trump administration, former President Donald Trump made bold moves with his trade policy: introducing tariffs on Chinese imports, steel and aluminium imports from the UK, EU and Japan, withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and threatening to do the same from the WTO.
When incumbent President Joe Biden won the election in 2021, there was a sense of stability on the horizon. Biden proclaimed that the US would “write the [trade] rules of the road for the world”. However, years later, he’s been criticised for keeping trade policy at a standstill and lacking strategy.
So, what’s down the road? How will the 2024 election play into and determine the future of trading with the US?
This CBS Executive Education webinar event explored both international and Danish relations with the world’s second-largest trading nation, tackling the prospects, potential outcomes and how these will affect Danish companies.

Dive into the current state of ESG reporting and how global criticism is affecting, and possibly changing, how companies work with ESG.

ESG is currently under much scrutiny – in the US alone, <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.ft.com/content/3f064321-138c-4c65-bbb9-6abcc92adead" target="_blank">49 anti-ESG bills</a> were introduced in 2023. In the Western hemisphere, <a rel="noopener" href="https://esgnews.com/tim-mohin-esg-backlash-hits-europe-fails-standards-clash/" target="_blank">conservative voices are questioning</a> the level of reporting that comes with ESG and whether “green filtering” investments will constrain companies and deprioritise financial returns. Furthermore, the European Commission’s President has stated, that they want to slash European Union reporting requirements by <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/posts/esg/esg-navigating-past-the-noise/" target="_blank">25%</a>.   As ESG has developed into a more and more polarising topic, it raises the question: How will this affect companies’ ESG reporting? Will this result in a whirlwind of continuous new and dismissed requirements? Are we looking at the end of ESG as we know it?   This event dived into the current state of ESG reporting and how this criticism is affecting, and possibly changing, how companies work with ESG. The event also took the temperature on Danish companies’ ESG performance and what the next steps and actions will be for companies in the tumultuous landscape of ESG reporting.

Open innovation is more than collaborative problem-solving – in fact, it can be a pivotal strategic initiative to evolve a business. Bridging the gap between internal and external in any industry, open innovation can help create new revenue streams, increase competitive advantages and access talent. In the life science domain, open innovation has proved its potential as a way to curb costs and shorten development times. We've seen how large firms have collaborated with university-based scientists or biotech firms to reduce uncertainty in R&amp;D, a field that has declined in activity in the past decades. But although the benefits can be many, open innovation may not be the right strategy for everyone. Therefore, there are a lot of decisions to be made when it comes to engaging in open innovation. And at our upcoming CBS Lifelong Learning, we hope to shine a light on some of them.

The workplace as we know it is under scrutiny: The Great Resignation, calls for a four-day work week and quiet quitting all highlight the importance of employee well-being and a fair and just workplace. This is why inclusion and belonging at work matters.
Why do we do so? Studies show that diverse and inclusive workplaces lead to higher revenues, innovation skills and more diverse recruitment (Great Place to Work). And feeling a sense of belonging at work, as enabled by inclusion, leads to a 56% increase in job performance, a 50% reduction in turnover risk, and a 75% decrease in employee sick days (BetterUp).
So, what barriers do we need to overcome and which opportunities do we need to grab? How do we make inclusion efforts authentic to not only our colleagues but ourselves and the workplace as a whole? These are some of the topics explored at the event.

This is due to the worldwide division of labour through the outsourcing of processes. However, this way of organising business – via supply chains – has led to greater vulnerability.
At the event 'Managing global supply chains in an era of turbulence' three experts presented and discussed different ways of dealing with interruptions or changes drawing from both theory and practice.
CBS Ph.D. fellow Amanda Bille, CBS dived into whether the role of the supply chain manager is becoming more political. In a novel case study, the responsibilities of companies in coffee supply chains are explored drawing on experiences from the industry. The findings revealed insights into the ever-evolving nature of supply chain managers.

There's a universal understanding that risks attributed to environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators result in financial consequences and market downturns for companies unable to respond or engage in these critical measures. 
With asset owners, asset managers, commercial banks and insurance companies applying ESG metrics universally, one stakeholder group remains unaware and inconsistently educated on these essential risks: corporate boards.
The session illustrates that boards have little ESG-related expertise pertaining to critical material issues related to the companies they serve and offers solutions for strengthening Danish boards.
Hear from Virginia Dundas, Head of Strategic Environment Programmes at Ørsted, the largest Danish energy company, about their journey with sustainability, and CBS Associate Professor Kristjan Jespersen's insight on how Danish and Northern Europe's firms deal with environmental, social, and governance factors (ESG). In recent years, there has been an increase in innovation activities and experimentation with new ways of organizing and hereby seeking to make food production more equitable end sustainable for the future. 
In this online session, CBS professors Valentina Tartari and Silviya Svejenova sheds light on some of these innovative approaches. In particular, they discussed the emergence of new forms of food production e.g. cellular agriculture, the importance of scientific research in forming this new industry as well as the power of culinary creativity and the role of community and place for social change in food.
To bring these approaches to life, the two professors engaged in conversation with accomplished and inspiring food entrepreneurs and discussed with them their vision for and distinctive approaches to a sustainable future of food.
