“It is crucial to step out of our comfort zones"

Deekshant Yadav is pursuing his MBA at Copenhagen Business School, where he has focused heavily on international sales, supply chain management, project management and sustainability. With a background that includes an MBA from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and professional certifications like PRINCE2 Agile® Practitioner, Deekshant brings a wealth of experience in shipping and logistics. Currently interning at Blue Water Shipping, he is developing a go-to-market entry strategy, aligning his work with CBS's vision of integrating societal values with business practices.

Why did you choose the Copenhagen MBA?

There were several main reasons for my decision to choose this MBA. Firstly, it is a very well-structured and one-year MBA programme, which allows for an intensive yet efficient learning experience. Secondly, I found the support from the career team to be excellent. Even before starting the MBA, the information I received gave me a clear idea of the support available throughout the programme for my career development. Thirdly, the smaller class size and the diversity within the cohort were very appealing to me. I wanted to gain in-depth knowledge and perspectives from a diverse group of people, which I believe is crucial for a comprehensive learning experience. Lastly, the focus on sustainability was a significant factor. I wanted to pursue my concentration in this area, and the programme's emphasis on sustainability perfectly matched my interests and career aspirations.

What key aspects of the programme have you enjoyed so far?

First, the diverse perspectives from my classmates and the various industry exposures I gained through interactions with them. This diversity enriches our discussions and broadens our understanding of global business practices. Second, the brilliant lecturers who teach our courses. The programme is well-structured with a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical perspectives from different companies, with a particular focus on sustainability. We also have the opportunity to participate in numerous industry visits and attend guest lectures, which I find very interesting and beneficial for applying our learnings in real-world scenarios. The exposure to different industries and companies, especially in the Nordics, has been invaluable.

What have you found challenging about the programme, and how have you adapted to those challenges?

The most challenging part was getting back into the classroom environment and managing my time effectively because there were multiple things to juggle. Adapting to an academic schedule after being in the workforce required a significant adjustment. To overcome this, I've improved my time management skills, sought help from others, and prioritised tasks more effectively. Balancing coursework, projects, and networking events has taught me the importance of organisation and time efficiency.

What does your strategy project entail?

My project is a go-to-market entry strategy for Blue Water Shipping, a reputed transport and logistics company based in Denmark with more than 80 offices worldwide.. My project involves in-depth industry research, competitor analysis, service and marketing strategy development, sustainability initiatives, and the positioning and segmentation of the target market. Having previously worked with Blue Water Shipping on some activities, I knew the company well, and they were very welcoming and supportive of my initiative.

What are your post-MBA plans and hopes?

I plan to continue in the transport and logistics industry, leveraging the knowledge and skills I've gained during my MBA. I plan to work in Denmark, which aligns well with my past background and current activities. The Danish market offers great opportunities in my targeted industry. Lastly, I aim to focus on sustainability, particularly in renewables. These areas are growing rapidly and align with my passion for creating a positive environmental impact.

What advice would you give to MBA candidates?

Be open-minded and willing to learn.

We often come with a narrow mindset based on our experiences, but it is crucial to step out of our comfort zones and be receptive to new ideas.

Network effectively, especially if you want to work in the region. Denmark, for instance, is a great place for networking, such as coffee chats. I've undertaken over 100 of these since I started. Seek insights from alumni and current students. There’s no better guidance than from those who have already been on the journey you aspire to take. Lastly, consider your post-MBA trajectory and find mentors who have made similar career switches. These mentors can provide invaluable advice and support.

What do you like about being a student at Copenhagen Business School?

The focus on research and collaboration at CBS is very high. CBS offers access to a vast network of information and people, enhancing both academic and practical learning. I also like the sense of unity within my cohort and the broader CBS community. I'm involved with CBS Photography and other societies, which offer great opportunities for networking and contributing to the community. These societies and networking platforms are wonderful for personal and professional growth, allowing students to be an integral part of the CBS community and beyond.

Anything else you would like to add?

It’s important to explore Denmark and the Nordics while pursuing the MBA. Don't limit yourself to one location. Denmark is diverse, and attending events beyond CBS can give you a broader perspective on life here. The cultural experiences and opportunities to engage with the local community are invaluable.
