Traditionally, ports are perceived primarily as infrastructure providers, serving as essential but passive points of entry and exit for goods in the global trade network. This view positions ports as basic facilities with their primary functions centered around providing the necessary physical space and basic logistical support. In today’s global trade environment, this limited view of ports is no longer sufficient. Globalisation, technological advancements, sustainability concerns, supply chain disruptions, international regulations and consumer demand present more challenges – but also opportunities. Shifting to a value-based perspective on ports helps address the complexity and interconnectivity of global supply chains by enhancing efficiency, fostering innovation, improving stakeholder collaboration, supporting sustainability, building economic resilience, and enhancing security and risk management.
